Starting Your Own Photography Business

If you love photography and are looking for a way to make money, why not think about starting your own photography business?

If you already have a job, you could start out with a part-time photography business.  That way you’d have a steady income while you were building your own business.  It takes some dedication and willingness to give up some of your otherwise free time, but if you enjoy photography and can keep your focus on the long-term rewards, that isn’t such a hardship.

What kind of photography interests you?

There are many different options to choose from when it comes to deciding what kind of photography business you’d like to have.  Some of these include:

  • portrait photography,
  • landscape photography,
  • pet photography,
  • street photography,
  • sports photography,
  • and the list goes on and on!

Just about anything you like to photograph can form the basis of a photography business.

Almost every type of photography can be specialized into a “sub-category”.  As an example, consider portrait photography.  You can opt to take pictures of adults only, children, or entire families.

You can do senior portraits, pin-up portraits, boudoir photography, fantasy or alter ego.  You do can specialized settings, such as on a farm, park or on a ship.  The possibilities are limited only by your imagination and what you can find a market for.

Turning the Photography Into A Business

Not only are there many different kinds of photography, but  many different ways you can monetize each kind of photography.

Using the portrait photography example again, you could not only offer the usual portrait packages, but add things like mugs, keychains, calendars, hats and any other printable item.

You might even offer a digital picture for use as a Facebook profile picture as part of a portrait package.  Put your business name on the corner of the picture like Olan Mills does, and you not only make a customer happy with a special picture for their Facebook profile, but you get free advertising for your business.
